The debut single by Irish singer-song writer Mike Peyton came out earlier this year and it’s been taking TikTok by storm.
A raucous singalong, perfect for pubs ironically, it may well be the ingeniously catchiest thing I’ve ever heard.
Mike’s original demo for the song was a little more sedate and reflective, but we decided to up the key, speed up the tempo and create a mildly Pogues-ish feel.
I seem to recall that we got a lot of the song done inside a day. Mike played the acoustic guitars, banjo and percussion. I played mandolin, banjo, electric guitar, piano, drums, bass and percussion.
I do love sessions where we don’t think too much, just throw down every idea we have – this was one of those. The result is a sort of kitchen-sink arrangement that makes use of every instrument in its own way.
Finally, Shimna Higgins played a phenomenal fiddle part and James Bell played extra banjo, to hang it all together.
I love the song, and so do a lot of other people; I went kind of viral on TikTok, particularly in the USA, where Mike has been getting a lot of appreciation.
Me? I ended up singing that song yesterday morning after a particularly raucous party. In 2026, I will not be drinking at all. But I will be working with Mike again, with his insanely catchy songs.
